Kitchen - Progress

The inside of the cabinets have been painted "Perennial Gold" and the shelves are on their second coat of (vegans, avert your eyes) shellac. Spent most of last weekend on them, and looking forward to finishing up this weekend.

The trim at the top of the cabinets and on the walls has also been taken down. The brown edge up there on the wall is possibly 80 years of grease collection. Gross.

I don't think I prepped the surface well enough and the paint, after drying for a week still feels "rubbery". I'm going to live in denial and just leave it. I'm more concerned about the surface of the shelves. I used the new no-VOC paint from the orange big box, and am pretty happy with it, it covered in two coats, the "welcome" stencils covered with three no problem. The walls will eventually be "Obstinate Orange". Had to go with a low-VOC from SW since it appears the readily available no-VOC paints are not available in bright colors. They're all more earthy. X wanted bright though.

Also going to play with color tints in the shellac. I've been using amber but its a little too light and too orange, so I'll be adding some reddish brown to see what happens.

After we get the kitchen stuff moved in, then I'll work on the doors and drawers. I'm running out of time before we have to have everything out of the old apartment. It's turning out to be more work and more time consuming than I thought, and the day job keeps butting in, but I want to do a good job and make sure it looks good for another 80 years.

Have to remember to look for new shelf pegs and door catches too, and figure out how to clean up the old hinges.
